FIFTEEN:

VOICES BOILING IN THE LIGHT

1.

Talking to a Corpse

The library was empty, silent, and still.

And cold.

We stepped inside. The Victorian tables and chairs, and the tidy bookshelves sat undisturbed. And yet... I noticed a weird kind of hush in the frigid air, as though something big had just happened the split second before we had opened the door, but we were too late, and all that was left were the echoes. Or maybe the echoes were in my brain. Or maybe they were merely traumatic memories from the first time I had set foot in that room.

“Go ahead and turn to the summoning, Jimmy,” I said. “And repeat the assistant’s litany, and do not go out of sequence, no matter what happens, you understand?”

“I’m ready, Father.”

“Here we go,” I said, and glanced around the tasteful French Provincial decor, the wainscotted walls and book-lined shelves. Every single light in the room was blazing. Hundred watt bulbs-- at least-- in every fixture. Every Tiffany lamp on every end table. Every jeweled chandelier. Every sconce. Something about all that light was bothering me.

“Do not remember, O Lord,” I began reciting, “our sins or those of our forefathers.”

“And do not punish us for our offenses,” Dodd replied.

“And lead us not into temptation,” I said, my voice strained and hoarse with nerves.

“But deliver us from evil,” Dodd answered.

“Save this house, the home of your servants,” I recited, gripping the bible so tightly it was bending backward. I realized my body was so coiled and tense, it was starting to perspire under my sweater.

But the room seemed dead all of a sudden, like we were talking to a corpse.

“Because it exists in your name,” Dodd answered, his voice sharp with tension.

“Lord here my prayer,” I said.

“And let our cries reach you,” Dodd replied.

“Unclean spirit, whoever you are, and all your companions who possess this place,” I said. “I command you, show yourself.”

I paused, and felt nothing.

“In the name of Jesus Christ, we suumon you to show us a sign, your name, and the day and hour of your damnation.”

Another pause.

Nothing.

“In the name of Jesus Christ, we summon you. Show us a sign. Make yourself known.”

Still nothing.

And it went on like that for nearly fifteen minutes.
